In short, a mold is a tool for shaping and forming articles; it consists of multiple components, and different types of molds are composed of distinct parts.

In short, a mold is a tool for shaping articles; it consists of multiple components, and different molds comprise distinct parts. The shaping of the final product is achieved primarily by altering the physical state of the molding material. Molds are often referred to as the “mother of industry.” Under external forces, the raw workpiece is transformed into a finished part with a specific shape and dimensions. They are widely employed in the manufacturing of engineering plastics, rubber, ceramics, and other materials, covering operations such as blanking, die forging, cold heading, extrusion, powder‑metal part pressing, die casting, as well as compression molding or injection molding. A mold features a defined contour or cavity geometry; the cutting edges of its profile enable the separation of the workpiece along that contour (blanking). Meanwhile, the cavity geometry allows the workpiece to assume the corresponding three‑dimensional form. Typically, a mold comprises two halves—the moving half and the fixed half (or the male and female dies)—which can be separated and reassembled. During separation, the finished part is removed; upon closing, the workpiece is injected into the cavity for forming. As precision tools with complex geometries, molds must withstand the expansive forces exerted by the workpiece and thus impose stringent requirements on structural strength, rigidity, surface hardness, surface finish, and machining accuracy. The level of development in mold manufacturing serves as an important indicator of a country’s overall mechanical engineering capabilities.
