Mold Manufacturing Inspection

The chemical composition determined by macroscopic examination plays a decisive role in ensuring the mechanical properties of steel; however, compliance with compositional specifications alone does not fully guarantee those properties. Due to the non-uniformity of microstructure and composition within steel, macroscopic examination largely helps to address this limitation.

Control of mold raw materials is carried out from the following aspects:

  1. The chemical composition determined by macroscopic examination plays a decisive role in ensuring the performance of steel; however, compliance with compositional specifications alone does not fully guarantee the material’s properties. Due to the non-uniformity of microstructure and composition within steel, macroscopic examination largely helps to address this limitation.

Macroscopic examination can reveal the microstructure of steel, continuity defects, and compositional inhomogeneities.

Standard GB 1979, “Grades of Low-Magnification Microstructural Defects in Structural Steels,” identifies eight common macroscopic defects: segregation, porosity, inclusions, shrinkage cavities, blowholes, white spots, cracks, and laps.

2.1. Evaluation of the Annealed Microstructure The purpose of annealing is to reduce the hardness of steel, facilitating machining and preparing the microstructure for subsequent heat treatments. The annealed microstructure of carbon tool steels is evaluated according to the Grade 1 assessment table specified in GB 1298.

  2.2. Non-uniformity of Cemented Carbide

Cr12-type ledeburite steel contains a large amount of eutectic carbides in its microstructure. The non-uniformity of these carbides significantly affects the material’s properties; therefore, their distribution must be strictly controlled.

In summary, due to the diverse and often one-off or small-batch nature of the production tasks in mold‑making plants and workshops, establishing and managing production quotas for molds presents certain challenges. Moreover, variations in equipment and technical capabilities further complicate the process. Therefore, when setting quotas, it is essential to tailor approaches to the specific conditions of each plant and workshop, developing advanced and realistic standard work‑time norms to enhance operational efficiency and labor productivity.
